The extraordinary summer transfer market closed on Friday (2/9/2022) in the early hours of West Indonesia Time with a number of new spending records. One of them is the signing of Antony for 82 million pounds, which is the most expensive purchase in the summer period.
The deal helped establish a new Premier League spending record of around £1.9 billion, breaking the previous record of £1.4 billion in 2017.
Nine of the top 20 clubs spent more than £100m as total spending bounced back after two seasons of decline due to Covid.
The following are some of the records created in the Premier League during the 2022 summer transfer window :

The combined spending of the 20 clubs during the summer transfer window, which opens from 10 June to 1 September, was 67% higher than the previous summer’s total of £1.1 billion.
According to financial services firm Deloitte , the 2022/2023 season already has the highest transfer spending since two seasons, exceeding the previous record of £1.86 billion.

Spending in Europe’s top five leagues, namely the Premier League, La Liga, Serie A, Bundesliga and Ligue 1, increased by 52% to 3.88 billion pounds. The Premier League accounted for 49% of that spending, the highest proportion since the summer of 2008 and nearly three times that of Serie A’s second-biggest spender of £646 million. Premier League club net transfer spending surpasses £1 billion for the first time. Premier League clubs made transfers of 169 players, compared to 148 in the summer of 2021 and 132 in the summer of 2020. The proportion of players recruited for a fee increased to 66% in the summer of 2022 from 45% in the summer of 2021; Championship club gross spending more than doubled the previous summer to £86m, but still far from the pre-COVID period, where the average from 2017-2019 stood at £169.4m.
